Paver patio calculator

Estimate pavers, base, bedding sand and material costs for a rectangular patio.

Your inputs

Use the units shown beside each field. Prices are optional: enter zero to leave a cost out. Use one currency throughout.

How many pavers do I need?

Divide patio area by the area covered by one paver, apply your extra-paver allowance and round up. This estimates rectangular units in a rectangular surface. It does not design the foundation or determine a safe base depth. Enter dimensions from your plan and the actual product specification. A decorative border, curved edge or mixed-size pattern needs a separate takeoff.

Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft patio

A 12 × 10 ft patio covers 120 square feet. An 8 × 4 inch paver covers 32 ÷ 144 square feet. Dividing gives 540 pavers before allowance. Adding 10% gives 594 pavers. At an entered example price of one currency unit each, the paver subtotal is 594. These prices illustrate the arithmetic and are not a current retail quote.

Base and bedding volumes

Volume equals surface area multiplied by layer depth, using consistent units. Four inches of base beneath 120 square feet gives 40 cubic feet, or approximately 1.48 cubic yards. One inch of bedding gives 10 cubic feet, or 0.37 cubic yards. The tool uses geometric layer volumes. It does not automatically convert a compacted design depth into a supplier’s loose delivery quantity.

Check the laying pattern and joint specification

Actual unit dimensions can differ from the nominal module size. Joint spacing changes how much area each installed unit covers. This simple count uses the dimensions you enter without a separate joint-width correction. Follow the manufacturer’s module dimensions where appropriate. Treat intricate patterns and edge cuts as a layout problem, rather than assuming an extra percentage will resolve every cut.

Use prices on the same basis

Enter paver prices per piece and base and sand prices per cubic yard. All monetary inputs must use the same currency. The displayed subtotal combines these material lines only. Delivery, tax, jointing material, edge restraints, equipment hire and labor are separate. If your supplier sells aggregate by weight, obtain the applicable density before comparing it with a volume quote.

Before placing an order

Confirm access for delivery, the purchase increments and whether the specified layer depth describes the installed or delivered material. Round supplier orders according to their actual selling units. Keep the estimate with your dimensions so that a later change can be checked. For posts around a project, use our concrete calculator separately; this patio estimate does not account for those holes.

Questions and method

Can I use this for a driveway? The area arithmetic is similar, but traffic loading, drainage and base requirements need an appropriate installation design. Does the waste allowance increase the base and sand? No, it applies only to pavers. The layer volumes remain geometric estimates. Does it include jointing sand? No, bedding and jointing quantities are different and must not be substituted.

Method and review: these examples follow the equations described above. Project planning guides and calculation context. Use the applicable supplier specification or institutional regulation for the assumptions. Written by Velour Trends · Updated 8 November 2026. Report a calculation issue.
