How many deck boards do I need?
Count the rows across the deck width, multiply by the stock boards needed along each row, add your waste allowance, then round up to whole boards. With the example inputs above, a 12 × 10 ft deck needs 25 stock boards, each 12 ft long. This is a decking-surface estimate, not a complete structural materials list.
Measure the deck surface and choose board direction
Sketch the walking surface as a rectangle and mark its length and width. In this decking calculator, boards run along the length; the width determines the number of rows. Swapping the two dimensions can change the result even when square footage stays the same. That difference comes from board lengths and the separate rounding of each row.
For an L-shaped deck, split the surface into non-overlapping rectangles and calculate each section. Note whether sections share a border so you do not count a picture-frame board twice. Keep stairs and landings on separate lines. Their cut patterns seldom match the main rectangular surface.
Actual board width, nominal sizes and decking gaps
Enter the finished face width of the board you intend to buy. A product described as 6 inches wide may have a different actual face width, so use its specification or a measured sample. Board thickness is not used in this surface count. It matters elsewhere in the design, but it does not determine how many parallel rows cover the width.
The gap input describes spacing between neighboring rows. The calculation includes only the internal gaps: there is one fewer gap than rows. Perimeter clearances, end-to-end gaps and manufacturer-specific movement allowances need a separate layout check. The default ⅛-inch value is an editable arithmetic example.
Deck board calculation formula
Use one measurement unit throughout each equation. Convert deck width into inches when board width and gap are entered in inches. The symbol ceil means round up to the next whole number; the calculator does not round a partial board down.
Rows = ceil((deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap)). Stock boards per row = ceil(deck length ÷ stock board length). Purchase quantity = ceil(rows × stock boards per row × (1 + waste ÷ 100)). This model assumes enough complete stock boards for each row, without transferring offcuts between rows.
Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft deck
A 10-ft width is 120 inches. With 5.5-inch boards and 0.125-inch gaps, the row calculation is ceil(120.125 ÷ 5.625) = 22 rows. A 12-ft deck length uses one 12-ft stock board in each row. The base quantity is therefore 22 boards, and ceil(22 × 1.10) gives 25 boards after a 10% allowance.
At an example price of $15 per board, 25 boards cost $375. This is the decking-board subtotal only. It does not include joists, beams, posts, connectors, fasteners, labor, delivery or tax. Enter a real unit price to compare shopping options.
| Deck surface | Stock board length | Boards with 10% waste |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 10 ft | 12 ft | 25 |
| 12 × 12 ft | 12 ft | 29 |
| 12 × 10 ft | 8 ft | 49 |
Compare stock lengths before adding waste
A shorter board can have a lower shelf price while producing a larger purchase count. For the same 12 × 10 ft surface, 8-ft stock requires two boards per row under this model. A planned cut list might reuse some leftovers, but the calculator deliberately does not assume that every offcut has a suitable use.
Waste is added after the base stock-board count. A 10% setting is a scenario to edit, not a promise that every layout fits within that allowance. Diagonal decking, damaged boards, selected grain patterns and border cuts can change the real requirement. Read the deck materials planning guide before turning a quantity estimate into an order.
Turn the deck estimate into a project list
Download the result to keep the dimensions, stock length and waste setting beside the quantity. Add the framing and hardware from your approved project plan as separate items. If you are buying lumber by volume, the board foot calculator uses a different measure from a decking board count.
When the walking surface is planned, use the deck stain calculator to estimate the finish for that surface. For a project with posts, enter the specified hole dimensions in the post-hole concrete calculator. Those tools answer related purchasing questions without implying that this surface estimate designs a deck.

Frequently asked questions
Does deck square footage tell me the board count?
Not on its own. Two layouts with the same area can need different stock-board quantities because row direction and board lengths change the cuts. Enter both dimensions and the stock length rather than dividing surface area by a nominal board size.
Does this calculate joists or decking screws?
No. This tool estimates surface boards and their entered cost. Joist spacing, structural members and fasteners depend on the design and installation system. Add them from the applicable project plan rather than inferring them from the board count.
Can I use composite decking?
You can enter composite-board dimensions to estimate a rectangular surface. Use the actual product width and specified gap. The result does not check joist spacing, thermal movement, fastening method or whether the selected product suits your project.
