SEMESTERS TO ONE CUMULATIVE RESULT

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA

To calculate CGPA from semester SGPAs, multiply each SGPA by its applicable semester credits, add the products, then divide by the total applicable credits. For 7.5 SGPA over 20 credits and 8.5 over 24 credits, the result is 354 ÷ 44 = 8.05. A simple average is valid only when the included semesters carry equal credits.

The credit-weighted CGPA-from-SGPA formula

CGPA = Σ(semester SGPA × applicable semester credits) ÷ Σ(applicable semester credits)

Enter completed semester SGPAs on the same grading scale. Use the total credits that actually belong in the cumulative calculation for each semester. These may differ from a timetable’s registered credits if your programme excludes particular courses. Combining an SGPA and an unrelated credit total breaks the weighted-average relationship.

Choose a 10-, 5- or 4-point scale to match your grade cards. Switching the scale changes the valid input range; it does not translate one institution’s grades to another scale. Do not combine a 4-point semester with a 10-point semester without an officially accepted conversion first.

The credit-weighted CGPA is (7.5 × 20 + 8.5 × 24) ÷ (20 + 24) = 354 ÷ 44 = 8.04545…, displayed as 8.05. The stronger second semester carries more credits, so it has more influence on the cumulative average. The unweighted average, (7.5 + 8.5) ÷ 2 = 8.00, answers a different question.

If both semesters instead carried 20 applicable credits, the weighted result would also be 8.00. Equal grade points are not required for simple averaging; equal applicable credit weights are. This distinction is why the tool starts in credit-weighted mode and asks you to confirm equality before using the alternative.

When can I average SGPAs without credits?

Use the “Equal credits confirmed” mode only when every included semester has the same applicable credit total. Each semester then receives a weight of one, and the result is the sum of the SGPAs divided by the number of included semesters. The displayed weight units are not a claim about the number of credits you earned.

If credits are unknown, find them on your semester grade cards or ask your examination office. Do not select equal weighting just because entering credits is inconvenient. A final project, internship or lighter semester can make totals unequal even when each semester covers the same number of months.

Why CGPA from rounded SGPAs can differ from a transcript

Displayed SGPAs may already have been rounded. Multiplying those rounded figures by semester credits can only reconstruct an approximation of the original course-level points. If your institution calculates cumulative CGPA directly from unrounded course records, a small difference is possible even when you enter every displayed SGPA correctly.

For a course-level calculation, use the SGPA calculator with credits and grade points for the relevant semester and retain its weighted totals. For an exact institutional cumulative result, rely on the official course records and applicable rules. The present tool keeps its own intermediate arithmetic unrounded but cannot recover precision missing from a published grade card.

Repeated courses, grade replacement, excluded modules and changing programme rules can also alter the applicable credits. The Include checkbox removes a semester from this calculation; it does not decide whether a university permits that exclusion. If only part of a semester is excluded, use an SGPA and credit total derived from the same applicable course set.

After CGPA: check the percentage conversion separately

CGPA aggregation and percentage conversion are separate operations. First combine semesters using the correct credits. Then use the CGPA to percentage calculator with the rule published for your institution, programme and scheme. A generic multiplication factor is not automatically an official equivalence.

Download the cumulative result to keep the SGPAs, weights and calculation with it. Record which semesters were included and whether you used credit weighting or confirmed equal credits. Do not round each weighted product before adding it, and do not label the result an official certificate.

Method and scope

The University Grants Commission’s credit-system definition of CGPA describes cumulative credit points and total credits. The semester-weighting calculation here follows from that relationship when each SGPA uses the matching applicable credits. Your programme’s rules govern exclusions and transcript reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?

Only when all included semesters have equal applicable credits. Otherwise, multiply each SGPA by its credits, add the products and divide by total credits. A simple average gives every semester the same influence even if their credit loads differ.

Can I calculate CGPA for only the semesters completed so far?

Yes. Enter the completed semesters you want to summarize and omit future semesters. The result describes that entered set; it is not a forecast of your final degree CGPA.

Can a failed semester be removed from the calculation?

The checkbox can exclude a row mathematically, but it does not authorize an academic exclusion. Follow your institution’s policy for failed or repeated courses. Removing an entire semester can omit successful courses that still belong in the cumulative record.

Does this convert SGPA directly into percentage?

No. It combines semester SGPAs into a cumulative grade-point average. Percentage equivalence is a separate institution-specific step linked above. This avoids implying that one conversion formula applies to every student.
