CGPA TO PERCENTAGE, EXPLAINED

How to convert CGPA to percentage

To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply your CGPA by the official factor your board or university specifies: CBSE: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (8.2 CGPA = 77.9%). VTU (2015/2017/2018): (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (8.2 CGPA = 74.5%). Anna University & Standard 10-Point: CGPA × 10 (8.2 CGPA = 82.0%). Mumbai University: (7.1 × CGPA) + 11. SPPU (Pune): CGPA × 8.8.

Convert CGPA to percentage in three steps

  1. Find your official rule. Look on the back of your grade card, mark sheet or your university's examination website. It usually states the CGPA to percentage formula.
  2. Enter your CGPA above and choose that formula. If none is published, ask your examination office. "Proportional" is only an illustrative scale normalization, not an official equivalence.
  3. Read your percentage and keep the method with it. Write it as "8.2 CGPA (77.9% under CBSE × 9.5)" on forms, so anyone checking can see how it was converted.

The CGPA to percentage formula

There is no single formula for every institution. A CGPA summarizes grade points under an institution’s own rules; some university systems use credit weighting while school systems can use subject averages. Each board or university decides whether and how it provides percentage equivalence. The general form is percentage = CGPA × multiplier, sometimes with an offset.

CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE introduced the 9.5 factor when it graded Class 10 on a 10-point CGPA scale. Under that rule, 10 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100%. The rule does not reconstruct the exact marks originally earned. CBSE used CGPA for Class 10 results from 2010 until the 2016–17 session. Since 2018 results have shown marks, so you only need the ×9.5 rule for older CBSE certificates.

Institution-specified ×10 rule: percentage = CGPA × 10. Use this option only when the applicable programme regulation or official certificate states that conversion. A 10-point scale alone does not establish a percentage formula.

VTU (2015/2017/2018 schemes): percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The official VTU formula page limits this rule to those schemes. For that rule, 8.0 CGPA becomes 72.5%. Confirm the regulation for your programme; do not assume it applies to later schemes.

VTU CGPA to percentage (2018, 2017 & 2015 schemes)

For Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) engineering students under the 2018 CBCS scheme, as well as 2015 and 2017 schemes, the official conversion prescribed by the university executive council is:

Percentage of Marks = [CGPA − 0.75] × 10

For example, if your cumulative grade point average is 8.25 CGPA, your VTU percentage is (8.25 − 0.75) × 10 = 75.0%.

CBSE 10th grade point conversion (× 9.5 rule)

For Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 certificates, grade points (GP) and cumulative averages (CGPA) are converted to an indicative percentage using the constant multiplier of 9.5:

  • Single Subject Percentage: Subject Marks (%) = Subject Grade Point × 9.5
  • Overall Aggregate Percentage: Overall Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5

Common conversions: 9, 8.5, 8.2, 7.6 and 7 CGPA

  • 9 CGPA in percentage: 85.5% (CBSE), 90% (× 10), 82.5% (VTU).
  • 8.5 CGPA in percentage: 80.75% (CBSE), 85% (× 10), 77.5% (VTU).
  • 8.2 CGPA in percentage: 77.9% (CBSE), 82% (× 10), 74.5% (VTU).
  • 7.6 CGPA in percentage: 72.2% (CBSE), 76% (× 10), 68.5% (VTU).
  • 7 CGPA in percentage: 66.5% (CBSE), 70% (× 10), 62.5% (VTU).

The same CGPA can differ by up to 7.5 percentage points depending on the rule. That is why it matters which formula you report.

Percentage to CGPA

To convert percentage to CGPA, reverse the same rule. Under CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 76% = 8.0 CGPA. Under the 10-point rule, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10. Under VTU, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75. Switch the calculator to "Percentage → CGPA" to do this automatically. It also warns you if a percentage is above what a formula can produce, such as 97% under CBSE, where the maximum is 95%.

4, 5 and 7-point grading scales

For scales other than 10 points, choose "Proportional" and set the scale maximum. A 3.4 GPA on a 4-point scale becomes 85%, and 5.6 on a 7-point scale becomes 80%. This is a transparent estimate, not an official equivalence. Admissions offices abroad and credential evaluators often use letter-grade bands instead, so state your original GPA and scale alongside any percentage.

Need to calculate your CGPA first?

Start with the SGPA calculator for course credits and grade points, then combine semester results in the CGPA-from-SGPA calculator. Return here for the institution-specific percentage conversion.

How CGPA itself is calculated

In a credit-weighted university system, multiply each course’s official numeric grade point by its applicable credits, add the products and divide by included credits. Letter-to-point mappings and course exclusions vary. The SGPA calculator models one semester; the CGPA-from-SGPA calculator combines matching semester credit totals. Other systems, including historical school CGPAs, can use different aggregation rules. Percentage conversion is a separate prescribed equivalence rather than recovery of original marks.

When you need your CGPA as a percentage

You may need a percentage when an application asks for marks rather than grades:

  • Job applications and campus placements, where companies often set a cut-off such as 60% or 6.5 CGPA.
  • Higher studies and entrance eligibility, for example a minimum percentage in the qualifying degree.
  • Scholarships with percentage-based criteria.
  • Study abroad applications, where you may need both your CGPA and a conversion certificate.

In each case, use your institution's formula and mention it. If a form gives no instruction, report your CGPA as well as the converted percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Multiply your CGPA by your institution's factor. For CBSE, multiply by 9.5. Where your institution explicitly specifies CGPA × 10, multiply by 10. For VTU’s 2015/2017/2018 schemes, subtract 0.75 and then multiply by 10; confirm the scheme before selecting it.

What is 8.2 CGPA in percentage?

8.2 CGPA is 77.9% under CBSE (8.2 × 9.5), 82% under the 10-point rule, and 74.5% under VTU’s 2015/2017/2018-scheme formula.

What is 7.6 CGPA in percentage?

7.6 CGPA is 72.2% under CBSE (7.6 × 9.5), 76% under the 10-point rule, and 68.5% under VTU’s 2015/2017/2018-scheme formula.

Why is 10 CGPA equal to 95% in CBSE?

Under the published ×9.5 conversion, 10 × 9.5 = 95%. This is a prescribed equivalence, not a recovery of exact original marks. See the CBSE 2015 FAQ for the historical CGPA context.

Does CBSE still give CGPA?

No. CBSE used CGPA for Class 10 results until the 2016–17 session and has reported marks since 2018. The ×9.5 rule applies to older certificates.

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

Divide by the same factor: percentage ÷ 9.5 for CBSE, percentage ÷ 10 for the 10-point rule, or percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75 for VTU’s 2015/2017/2018-scheme formula.

Can I use the CBSE formula for my university CGPA?

Only if your university says so. Universities set their own rules, and many use CGPA × 10. Using the wrong rule can understate or overstate your result.
