How to calculate SGPA
SGPA is the credit-weighted average of the grade points for the courses included in a semester. Multiply each course’s credits by its grade point, add those weighted points, then divide by the included credits. In the example above, 74 weighted points divided by 9 credits gives an SGPA of 8.22 out of 10.
SGPA formula: credits × grade points
Use the course credits and numeric grade points on your marksheet or in your institution’s grade table. Credits describe the weight of a course; they are not your marks or the number of subjects. Grade points describe the awarded grade on the selected scale. The two values have different jobs, so entering a percentage in the grade-point field will not produce a valid SGPA.
Select a 10-, 5- or 4-point scale to match your records. The scale sets the allowed range; it does not convert grades from one system into another. If your transcript shows letters, map each letter to its official numeric point before using the tool. We do not assume that an A, B or passing grade has the same value at every university.
SGPA calculation with three subjects
| Example course | Credits | Grade point | Weighted points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | 9 | 36 |
| Physics | 3 | 8 | 24 |
| Laboratory | 2 | 7 | 14 |
| Total | 9 | — | 74 |
The calculation is (4 × 9 + 3 × 8 + 2 × 7) ÷ (4 + 3 + 2) = 74 ÷ 9 = 8.2222…, displayed as 8.22. A simple average of the three grade points would be 8.00. The answers differ because the 9-point course carries more credits than the 7-point course.
The calculator keeps full precision through the multiplication and division, then displays the final result to two decimal places. The result panel and download show the included credits and weighted points so you can reproduce the answer. An institution may apply a different rounding or transcript rule; your official grade card remains the authoritative record.
Which courses should count toward SGPA?
Include only the courses and credits applicable under your programme’s rules. The calculator includes a zero grade point in the denominator when its row is checked. That is different from excluding a course altogether. Do not remove a failed course merely to raise the answer: consult the regulation governing how failures, withdrawals, audit courses and pass/fail modules are handled.
Use the Include checkbox to leave a row out of both the weighted-point total and credit total. An excluded row is kept on screen for context but does not affect the result. If you remove the row instead, it disappears from the working list. At least one included course with positive credits is required; a zero-credit course cannot be included in a weighted average.
Repeated or improved grades may replace an earlier attempt, count alongside it, or follow another rule. This general tool does not choose a repeat policy. Enter the set of applicable course results from your institution, rather than assuming every attempt belongs in the same semester total.
SGPA, CGPA and percentage are different steps
SGPA describes one semester. To combine completed semesters, use the CGPA from SGPA calculator with each semester’s applicable credits. If semester credits differ, adding SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters is not the same as a credit-weighted CGPA.
Once you have a cumulative CGPA, use the CGPA to percentage calculator only with the conversion rule applicable to your institution and scheme. Multiplying SGPA or CGPA by a generic factor does not establish an official percentage equivalence. Keep the calculation and the institution’s conversion rule together when checking an application form.
The University Grants Commission’s CBCS instructional template provides credit-based academic calculation context. Course inclusion, grade mapping and transcript treatment remain institution-specific. This independent calculator is not an official university service.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate SGPA from marks alone?
Not without the grade-point mapping for your course. Convert marks to the official grade point first, then enter credits and points. Mark bands and relative grading can differ by programme, so this tool does not invent a universal mapping.
Do I include a subject with zero grade points?
If your regulation includes that course in the applicable semester credits, enter zero and leave the row included. If it is excluded under your rules, uncheck the row. Those choices change the denominator and can produce different results.
Why is my official SGPA slightly different?
Check course inclusion, repeated attempts, applicable credits and rounding. Make sure the points are on the selected scale. The tool calculates the weighted average of exactly what you enter; it cannot determine every institution’s transcript policy.
Are course names or grades saved?
The calculation runs in your browser. The tool does not upload or persist your entries. Download or print the result if you want to keep a copy before leaving the page.
