How to use this cd calculator

Estimate certificate-of-deposit maturity value from an APY, deposit and term. Start with the labeled example values, then replace them with the figures for your problem. Keep units consistent. Results update as you type. If an entry is invalid, the result is cleared and the page explains what needs attention, rather than showing a stale answer.

Formula and calculation method

Maturity value = deposit × (1 + APY/100)^(months/12). APY already includes the effect of compounding over a year. This tool therefore does not apply an additional compounding-frequency factor. Interest equals maturity value minus the initial deposit. It assumes the quoted APY remains fixed and all earned interest stays invested.

Worked example

A deposit of 10,000 at a fixed 5% APY for 12 months grows to 10,500 before taxes. A six-month term uses an exponent of 0.5 and produces approximately 10,246.95 under the equivalent-yield model. The shorter-term estimate may differ from a provider’s exact day-count calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

Use the product’s APY rather than its nominal interest rate. This model excludes additional deposits, withdrawals, early-withdrawal penalties, taxes, fees and rate changes. It cannot confirm deposit insurance coverage or compare institution safety. Check the CD disclosure for how the institution credits interest and treats partial years.
